La hyalita es una variedad incolora de ópalo. Se trata de un ópalo-AN, un cristal de sílice amorfo que contiene un 3-8% de agua. Debido a su estructura diferente, carece de la opalescencia o juego de colores que presentan los ópalos preciosos. Muestra una fuerte fluorescencia verde a la luz ultravioleta. La hyalita se encuentra como masas globulares o botroidales y también como incrustaciones irregulares en ambientes volcánicos y pegmatíticos donde el sílice se deposita desde la fase gaseosa.
